Bringing a multi-city Journey Planning Solution to Nottingham and Derby

As a part of the Future Transport Zone funding, a Department for Transport (DfT) program, Nottingham City Council, with support from Derby City Council, has appointed Trafi to deliver a joint multi-modal journey planning platform connecting Nottingham and Derby cities.

A 2-year contract worth £ 2.6 million has been awarded to mobility technology provider Trafi to engineer an innovative MaaS platform consisting of a customizable white-label app, a back-office tool, a mobility intelligence platform, and several deep-level integrations. Alongside Trafi, other participants in the project include Journeycall who will handle customer support, and the Dairy Creative Agency who will take the lead on spreading the word and ensuring the new journey planning app becomes a familiar name in Nottingham and Derby.

A single smartphone travel app, where users can find, plan, book, and pay for their journey, is one of the three innovations of Nottingham and Derby’s Future Transport Zone, which plans to make urban mobility more accessible, seamless, and sustainable for its citizens.

The app is planned to go live in mid-2025 and will serve 1.4 million inhabitants, making their travels and commutes easier by offering the following integrations:

  • Multimodal journey planner

  • Route search

  • Real-time public transport schedules

  • Deep-level MSP integrations (buses, trams, rail, e-scooters, e-bikes and car sharing)

  • In-app ticketing & payments

  • ID verification

By appointing Trafi, Nottingham City Council is not just reshaping their mobility landscape, but setting an example for what the future of urban transport could look like.

Imagine a world where sustainability, multi-modality, and simplicity in travel are not just ideals but the standard. This DfT-funded project is more than simply a step towards easing journeys for the citizens of Nottingham and Derby - it is a big leap towards a vision where all cities can witness the real benefits of adopting multi-modal journey planning solutions.

“We are excited to have partnered with Trafi, who will provide the very best integrated and digital platform, enabling travellers within the Nottingham and Derby city areas to be able to plan, book pay, and ride.  Through the introduction of a multi-modal environment incorporating public transport, shared and active modes as well as micro-modal capabilities this new platform will be able to provide door-to-door journey planning, provide real-time updates, as well as enable integrated ticketing and payments within the same platform.  We are looking forward to starting our journey together.”

Leader of Nottingham City Council and Executive Member for Transport
